Third Visit
25th April 2018:
Third visit to the school and today is the day where we start teaching these kids actual choral speaking. Calling out attendance we realised there were actually quite a number of them missing from the classroom. Since there was time, we started the rest off with a game we've prepared a while back, the Animal Puzzle. This got them really involved since I have a feeling it was not a game they have tried before 👌 Some photos of them during the game below 👇
The kids were given the animal cutouts and one representative from each group were blindfolded, while the rest of their teammates guided them to stick the pieces in the right places. We tried to get them to communicate in English which I must say was a huge fail, but at least they tried 💁
While they were occupied with that, I managed to write a few lines down for their choral speaking text. Once we had their engagement and attention, we went straight to work. We wrote down the lines on the whiteboard and got them to read the text off the whiteboard. At first, it sounded just like 20 mumbles of words, but soon after making them do it properly, they finally sounded like coherent sentences. We had them read the sentences over and over again, to make sure they got their pronunciation right, they knew the meaning to these words and we also tried to keep it as close to what they had originally written as possible. I trust by recognizing sentences they have built themselves it would make them become more engaged in this activity which would make the teaching process easier. We also chose some kids from the class to do solo lines as well as chose a conductor.
At exactly 2.20pm sharp, the kids were so done with us and could not be ready enough to run out of the class. I myself was rather happy the class ended. It was tiring to shout above 20 voices especially for more than an hour. However, I am glad we did progress in our task which was to get them to choral speak. Through this activity, we could also know how our kids personalities were, who were more inclined to participate and those who had better speaking skills and so on. Since they had warmed up to us it would also be easier to delegate tasks the following week as we wrap up the text.
