Second Visit
18 April 2018:
Today we carpooled as usual to the school and I felt this time we were more prepared since we have met the kids already prior to this. Fufy and I called out attendance first before warming them up with a game of charades. Instead of opening the floor to who will volunteer first, we started walking up to students who rarely participated and had them engage with the rest of the class - this also helped us know the student;s personalities which made it easier for us on how to deal with them.
After that, we reminded them of the mini homework we gave them, which was to write 2 sentences regarding social media, and as expected, none of them actually did it so we distributed papers and got them to work right away. It was nice that some of the kids were warming up to us and being responsive when presented a task. I didn't feel as tensed as I was the previous week. Some of them kept coming up to us for advice and questions which actually made the teaching process more enjoyable. 💪
Time passed quickly as compared to the previous visit which was surprising especially for me, since I personally actually dreaded today. It has been a long week, and I was not really feeling very enthusiastic. After getting their sentences, I quickly wrote and edited them all out on pieces of paper. We then got them into two groups and made them arrange the sentences using their own creativity. After that we got them to stick the sentences onto a piece of mahjong paper on the board and read them out loud. I guess we just really wanted to see what we have to work with to get this done for the final performance.
It was hilarious listening to them shout out the sentences, with intonation - without even having us to tell them or demonstrate to them how to do so. From actual words to just slurring the words, it was a blur of words jumbled together. 😅 - it is okay, I have high hopes that we will get there! At least this time, we did not have kids running out the door at random times. Instead, while rounding them up to line up before leaving, a few kids were comfortable enough to even negotiate with me their dismissal time ☝ All in all, it was a good session. Going back to class after that was such a drag after that, we were completely exhausted. Why are kids so exhausting? Props to all these high school teachers out there!
